Creative people don’t usually stick to a single medium. It is not that often that you’ll find a famous face that does not also do something else with their creativity, actors that are also singers (Donald Glover/Childish Gambino), comedians turning into actors (Jack Whitehall), and musicians turning to acting (Jack Black). What isn’t spoken about as often, however, is some of the talented people switching roles and creating pieces of art.
5. Terry Crews
Known for his muscle mass, Brooklyn 99, and being the host of America’s Got Talent, it’s surprising to me to think that this man is also a very good artist. He has been showing off his skills across his Instagram, working on a variety of pencil portraits.
The algorithm for me doesn’t usually work that well but I wasn’t pleasantly surprised when Terry popped up with a video of his pencil drawings of the America’s Got Talent judges.
There’s something I really like about some pencil drawings, Terry’s included, because of how you can get them so hyper realistic. I never thought a medium that is so simple would be able to create something so intricate.
The best place to see this man share his talent is on his Instagram. Where he occasionally shares some of his work, people like Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell are some of the people he has already drawn.
4. Jim Moir/Vic Reeves
A variety of different styles from nature-based drawings of Gannets and, one of my favourites, The Bee Eater. Right through to buildings from across the country and abstract art of various mammals and townscapes.
The Dove from Above is a thing of the past and Vic Reeves now goes by his real name Jim Moir. He has hung up his slap stick comedy, and partner in crime Bob Mortimer, to pick up paints.
Definitely not someone I thought would be an artist later in life.
Watch Jim and Bob Mortimer on Sky TV.
This Christmas Bob Mortimer is meeting back up with his comedic companion to talk about painting and birds on Sky TV.
3. Ian “H” Watkins, Steps
Shown on BBC News, and gave me the idea for this blog post, Ian Watkins is more known as a lively singer and part of the band Steps (you know, 5,6,7,8!). But you might not know he’s also quite good with paints too!
Although I was quite surprised, after reading his biography it becomes less of a shock. Seemingly art and performing being almost side by side as he grew up. Only giving up on arts to pursue his love for being on a stage, something that worked out quite well if I do say so myself.
Ian creates amazing landscapes through a mixture of different textures – some that remind me heavily of some of the amazing Welsh landscapes I’m used to growing up around. Particularly his work Geirionydd which makes me think of the hills that surrounded me growing up and Fields of Gold, which looks like the fields of flowers near my school.
2. Joe Pasquale
Usually touring the country as a well-known comedian and famous for his “I know song that’ll get on your nerves” jingle, he’s incredibly adept with a paintbrush. I hadn’t heard much about Joe until a Radio X interview where he was talking about a painting tour he was doing across the UK.
Some have been a bit abstract but most are cartoon style drawings of popular characters, some of his most recent have focused on Batman’s archnemesis The Joker.
Previous pieces created by Joe have also included major UK landmarks and landscapes that he created on his journey across the country.
1. Jim Carrey
Disappeared from the limelight for a while, I thought he had retired. It turned out that he was actually hiding away working on building his art gallery. Although a bit more abstract than some of the others, he has an excellent use of a variety of colours to bring a scene out.
I’m impressed by some of his work, though not everyone’s cup of tea, and some of his political commentary through the canvas. Including some of the items in this ET Canada article.
Jim is one of my favourite actors, my favourite movie of all time is The Truman Show, but he’s also starred in things like The Mask, Ace Ventura, as well as Dumb and Dumber. Now knowing he’s a secret celebrity artist, my respect for him has increased.
